On This Day, 22 July 2012, Alfie Boe Sang…

…at Ponty’s Big Weekend, Pontypridd, South Wales.  It was part of his UK Summer Tour of that year, recently featured in the Favourite Alfie Boe Tour poll.  For fans of the jeans and white shirt look, this is one for you (thanks to Annie for sharing):

This isn’t my favourite Alfie song by a long way but it seems to perfectly sum up that summer tour – and it also features the lovely Laura Wright who was touring with Alfie at the time.

On This Day, 25 June 2007, Alfie Boe Sang…

…at the Coliseum in the ill-fated ENO production of Kismet or as Alfie calls it in his autobiography, My Story, “the horror”.  According to Alfie, the production was a nightmare of a project.  The only good thing was the chance to appear on Michael Parkinson’s chat show to sing the show’s most famous song, Stranger in Paradise:

I remember seeing Alfie on the Parkinson show but I was not remotely interested in either him or his voice at that time; it must have been the combination of Alfie, the beard and Les Mis (not to mention the puffy white shirt) that hooked me! I believe this is also how Alfie and Michael Ball became friends…and if that hadn’t happened, Michael would not have been able to recommend Alfie for the role of Jean Valjean for the 25th anniversary concert of Les Mis. So, everything happens for a reason, even if that reason remains a bit unclear at the time!

If you saw Alfie in Kismet, leave a comment with your thoughts on the production – thank you x

On This Day, 13 June 2014, Alfie Boe Sang…

Buona Sera at a Salt Lake City fundraiser for the Utah Children’s Center, a charity only recently added to his increasing portfolio.

Alfie originally came to be involved with the centre through a childhood friend of his wife, Sarah. The Communications Director, Courtney Garay tells us more: “Sarah Boe’s childhood friend [a supporter of the centre] reached out to Alfie and Sarah to share her passion for The Children’s Center and they were kind enough to take a tour. From that moment, they both offered to help spread our mission; provide comprehensive mental health care to enhance the emotional well-being of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and their families.”  In addition, Courtney told us that Alfie had helped to procure musical instruments for the children in the musical therapy programme, a cause he has a multitude of experience with through his connection with Nordoff Robbins.

Back to Buona Sera – at that point, we had heard a couple of songs from Serenata the week before when Alfie sang at another charity event, Symfunny, in aid of Parkinson’s UK but Buona Sera was not amongst them.  Thanks to Marcia for sharing:

Serenata is Alfie Boe’s eighth album and is available here:

On This Day, 4 June 2012, Alfie Boe Sang…

…on the balcony at Buckingham Palace.  The occasion was of course the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and he was duetting with Renee Fleming on Somewhere, from West Side Story (thanks Annie for sharing):

Fans of Alfie with longer hair will be happy!

Earlier in the evening, Alfie performed a medley of O Sole Mio / Now or Never on the main stage which set the twitter world alight; up until that point, twitter had been asking a lot of questions along the lines of “is the sound system working” as some acts appeared to struggle.  However, within thirty seconds of Alfie starting to sing, twitter woke up to the fact that “oh, this bloke’s really good, the sound is obviously working”.  His pelvic thrust also caused a few comments!

Tonight, Alfie is performing for the first time with the Phoenix Symphony (as a replacement for Colm Wilkinson) – wonder what he’ll sing?

On This Day, 26 May 2013, Alfie Boe Sang…

…at the Memorial Day Concert, Washington DC.  Well known for supporting the armed forces in the UK, it was only a matter of time before he was invited to do the same in his adopted homeland.  He sang, of course, Bring Him Home:

Thanks to Claire for sharing the video.

Memorably, Alfie also got on well with Colin Powell – the two of them were side by side during the finale and seemed to be doing their own thing most of the time!

Katherine Jenkins also appeared that year (her second appearance) and she is back again this year so hopefully, Alfie will be asked back in years to come.

On This Day, 19 April 2007, Alfie Boe Sang…

…at Music Of Morse, shown on ITV.  The two songs are E Lucevan E Stelle and Brindisi, with Lesley Garrett.  There are several Brindisi duets on the Alfie Boe youtube page but this is my favourite, largely due to the twinkle in Lesley Garrett’s eye – she very nearly succeeds in making Alfie laugh out loud during his first line!

I still cherish hopes of hearing some of this repertoire in person one day!

…It’s Only Love on the last night of his Storyteller tour: Belfast.  This was by no means the first time we had heard this song on the tour but as it was the last, they did it a bit differently (more material for the Rear of the Year competition too):

Every time Alfie gets a new band together, we all say how much we love them and how much we then miss them when they’re gone – just goes to show that Alfie knows how to pick the best MD’s and musicians.

On This Day, 13 February 2010, Alfie Boe Sang…

Funiculi Funicula with the Leigh Orpheus Male Voice Choir, in a fund raising concert for the RNLI.  Alfie recorded this for the La Passione album in 2007 and it’s one of my favourites – I always sing along despite only knowing two words!  And I bet I’m not the only one!!!  The only things I’m not keen on is the lack of beard; regular readers will know that I’m quite keen on Alfie Boe’s Beard – and I definitely know I’m not alone on this one!

This concert was at the Cliffs Pavilion, Southend, where Alfie appeared on his UK tour of summer 2012.  The set list then was considerably different – as befitted his musical journey at that time.

Since Alfie has included some more classical songs to his recent repertoire, I wonder if he would ever consider singing this again?  Oh well, a girl can dream!

La Passione can be ordered below:

Alfie’s return to Neapolitan songs, Serenata, is also available:

On This Day, 25 January 2011, Alfie Boe Sang…

….Au Fond Du Temple Saint, the baritone / tenor duet from Bizet’s opera The Pearl Fishers.  The baritone in this case was of course the wonderful Bryn Terfel and this rendition is rightly so a favourite amongst classical Alfie fans.  Thoughtsofjustafan’s favourite Alfie Boe duet poll last year saw Bryn and Alfie secure the top spot over Laura Wright and Barcelona.

As this opera nearly killed him*, you wouldn’t think that Alfie would have that much affection for it but he continued to sing it until relatively recently.  Je Crois Entendre Encore was a staple of his UK tour of summer 2012, albeit sung acapulco!  If you were there or seen the youtube videos, you’ll know what that means!

*And if you don’t know this story why not buy Alfie’s 2012 autobiography (click on the image below) – the first chapter tells all!
