Introducing Ashleigh Jane

Updated post – Ashleigh tweeted her cover of Nella Fantasia to Alfie…and he loved it!  Well done Ashleigh!

As you know, thoughtsofjustafan is all about great music and whilst frittering my day away on Twitter recently, I came across a soprano by the name of Ashleigh Jane and immediately thought that readers of thoughtsofjustafan would really like to hear her too.

Although Ashleigh is currently pursuing music as a hobby, she would dearly love to be able to sing full time and records herself for sound cloud as often as she can.  Click here to listen to a varied selection of musical theatre, opera and her own self penned songs.

Ashleigh has answered a few questions for us here too!

Q:  Tell us about you.

I am a 25 year old classical/opera singer (soprano). Music plays an enormous part in my life. I have loved singing for as long as I can remember. Growing up I used to put on impromptu ‘concerts’ for my family and friends. I had singing lessons in my teens but when I started full time employment unfortunately I had to give them up. I wanted to carry on singing however and now do it as a hobby although it is my main passion in life and I am hoping to pursue a career in singing.

Q: Who are your singing idols?

I have greatly admired Richard and Adam (Johnson) who were finalists in a previous series of Britain’s Got Talent since their first audition. I am also an enormous fan of Collabro, the recent winners of Britain’s Got Talent. They have inspired me to follow my dreams and it would be a dream come true to perform with them one day, possibly a song from Les Miserables or Phantom of the Opera.

Q:  You write some of your own songs too (I particularly like Say it To My Heart); whare are your song writing influences?

I write from personal experiences and often when I feel a certain emotion I write the lyrics down then and there from my heart. Certain incidences in my life have been my inspiration for some of my own songs such as bullying, heartbreak and grief. I find songwriting is a good release from the stresses and strains of everyday life.

Q: If you could write a song for anyone, who would it be?

That’s an interesting question. I think Katherine Jenkins has a beautiful voice and it would be wonderful to perhaps write a song for her to sing one day, but I would be happy for any artist to perform one, or several, of my songs.

Q: Your soundcloud is a mixture of musicals, opera and self penned songs.  Which do you prefer?

I am mainly a classical and opera singer but do sing showtunes as well. I enjoy songwriting but I would have to say that I am an enormous fan of musicals and singing songs from the shows is what I love the most. Although I do have a couple of favourite pieces of classical music, in particular Nella Fantasia.

Q: Looking ahead 10 years, where would you like your music to be?

Looking ahead my ultimate dream is to be in a recording studio making an album and to be performing in concerts and travelling around the UK and Europe, possibly even further afield. My aim is to make music and to try to make people happy and help people through it. Music is an extremely powerful tool and if I can do something I love and make people happy at the same time, that is a wonderful added bonus.

Ashleigh also a YouTube channel and the video below is one of her own songs, Thank You For Loving Me:

Les Mis on Britain’s’ Got Talent

Heard of Collabro yet?  Well, if you haven’t, where have you been this week?  Collabro are the boy band featured in the first episode of Britain’s Got Talent (BGT).  At the time of the audition they had only been together for a month, a fact that had the vast majority of us, particularly and perceptibly, Simon Cowell, groaning at the thought of the awfulness that was to come.

And then they started to sing…and it was not awful at all, it was …wow! The choice of song, Stars, from Les Miserables was unexpected but, dare I use an overused word, inspired?  After all, BGT has previous form for propelling singers of Les Mis songs to superstardom, even if they don’t go onto win the show.  Additionally, by using one of the less famous songs, there was less chance of the audience comparing them to the well known version. In case you’ve been hiding under a rock this week, here here is Collabro singing Stars:

It now remains to be seen which song the band choose for their semi-final appearance; do they choose another Les Mis song, something from another musical or something else altogether?  Apparently, Collabro, or Richard in particular, cite one of their influences as Alfie Boe.  Alfie’s definitive song is Bring Him Home, from Les Mis and we know that this song lends itself beautifully to an arrangement for at least four voices as showcased by The Four ValJeans at the end of the Les Mis 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2 in 2011.

While we wait to see what the future holds for Collabro, lets take another look at the master of Bring Him Home, Alfie Boe: This performance is from Alfie’s Storyteller tour at the Royal Albert Hall.
