Alfie Boe’s Best Ever Song: Number 9

A week on from the first song to be revealed in the Alfie Boe Top Ten Songs countdown, the song voted by you at Number Nine is Fratello Sole, Sorella Luna, from You’ll Never Walk Alone.  I must confess to being a little surprised that this song made it onto the Top Ten in place of other more well known songs (Wheels of a Dream comes to mind).  However, perhaps it is the very fact that we don’t hear it very often that made people vote for it.  Indeed, I can only find a link to it on Spotify so here it is:

Alfie Boe/Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra/John Owen Edwards/Crouch End Festival Chorus – Fratello sole sorella luna

Not knowing much about this particular song meant that I had to put in a bit of research and was somewhat surprised to learn that it comes from a 1972 Franco Zeffirelli film Brother Sun, Sister Moon which is about St Francis of Assisi.  Donovan wrote and performed the songs on the soundtrack and re-recorded them in the early 1990’s.  More recently, Friar Alessandro has recorded the song.

Dying to know how many “classical or arias” are on that list. Il mio tesoro and Cujus Animam shows all of his vocal prowess.

I’m surprised too really not knowing the final ten yet. And I think we will get Wheels of a Dream on the tour given he did it at Symfunny. And he loves it.

I am thrilled that the song made it because it was one of my picks and I never tire of listening to it. It is also called “Dolce Sentire” after the first line in the song.
Here is Andrea Bocelli’s version from YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKAWDvSSOjU which is similar to Alfie’s but I think AB has the superior voice. But if you really want to hear a contrast, listen to the Donovan version; this is a case where the classical version has really made a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FIIEBQ7e3Y
